The new crime initiatives in Baltimore city

by

The events of April 2015 in Baltimore city with scenes of violent protests and looting will be etched in the minds of many across the world. The city erupted after Freddy Gray suffered a fatal spinal cord injury in police custody. This year Baltimore city homicides rates are trending to surpass record levels. Crime indeed is a serious public health issue as it is a cause of illness in the individual but its roots in poverty, lack of education, lack of access to health care and poor socio-economic status highlights the major inequities in the society.

The Mayor and the interim Police Commissioner came together with a new crime initiative which involves the city leaders from all the facets of the community in a forum like setting. Community members such as law enforcement, state officials, federal officials and public health officials, and others will discuss real time trends with transparency and share information in an effort to have a more targeted approach to the crime problem. Unfortunately there has been a setback as the Baltimore State attorney believes that this initiative can compromise the integrity of many ongoing cases.

As physicians and most importantly advocates for a healthy nation, we believe that this initiative would have been a good start in addressing the key determinants of this complex issue. When the blatant disparities in the foundations of education that gives persons the opportunity to thrive are addressed in a meaningful way then progress in seeking justice for all will be a reality.

Thanks for this interesting and in the same time complicated issue. I agree with the writer that this initiative would have been a great starting point to put at least some of the problems facing the city of Baltimore in the pathway for discussions and ultimately future solutions. Bringing various representatives of different backgrounds including officials and community leaders would definetly help in recognizing these problems.
